Sungevity is the third largest solar PV retailer in the US household segment and is about to enter the Australian market via a joint venture with Nickel Energy. The interesting thing is that Sungevity is headed up by two people who were originally engaged in the solar sector in Australia but moved over to California because of a more conducive and supportive market environment for solar PV. So the fact that they are taking the plunge back into the Australian market is a positive sign. Climate Spectator

Spot STCs trading against forwards

The EU carbon permit price, at its current low of around ten dollars per tonne, is not a reflection of the cost of meaningful climate change action. Rather it is an artefact of Europe’s economic mess and policy preferences. And the current CDM price of around five dollars per tonne is indeed the price at which these emissions offset credits can be bought in secondary markets, but it bears no resemblance to the actual and expected carbon prices in major trading schemes including the EU, California and South Korea. None of these schemes expect to have their domestic price set in international offset markets. Climate Spectator

STCs 27.10 & bid on - LGCs to fall more

IN THE NEWS:

The Baillieu government will back a revised push to build a massive solar power project in Victoria's Mallee region, but has refused to say how much money it is committing.

Power giant TRUenergy is seeking funding for the Mallee Solar Park from the federal government's $1.5 billion solar flagship program, which was reopened this year after two other projects that won grants failed to meet key conditions.

The Baillieu government says it will contribute money to the Mallee project if it wins the second attempt at flagship funds. But it will not say how much it is putting up, citing the commercial-in-confidence nature of the tender process.

TRUenergy is proposing to build a 180 megawatt solar power park 10 kilometres south of Mildura, using thin film photovoltaic panels. The AGE p5 today

IN THE NEWS:

The federal government has rejected talk that it plans to discontinue the small-scale renewable energy scheme, which subsidises household installation of solar panels, a year earlier than planned.

The speculation comes as industry participants warn the scheme could add $280 million to electricity bills by December, with retailers forced to buy up the 7 million surplus certificates expected to be issued this year unless it is cancelled.

That cost could rise to $480 million by July 2013.AFR today
